More than eight months after the June 23 UK referendum, it is still unclear what will happen to the rights of the estimated 3.3 million Europeans living in the UK and the 1.2 Britons living elsewhere in the EU. ECU believes that in order for citizens to make rational choices and exercise their rights, they must have fact-based information they can trust. Only if they are thoroughly familiar with the various options available can they support the best possible deal when negotiations begin and assert their rights once an agreement is reached.
ECU has been working to produce a thorough and objective analysis that examines how citizens' rights will be affected under different Brexit scenarios. Using the study as a starting point, the project will pursue a threefold objective:
General awareness: Raising awareness of the different Brexit options and their impact on the nearly 4.5 million citizens who will be most affected by the outcome of the negotiations.
Information for professionals: Inform associations that work directly with citizens about the likely consequences of Brexit under the different scenarios so that they can help citizens better assert their rights.
Campaigning and advocacy: Advocate for the best possible outcome for citizens.
